Samsung galaxy tab 7" verizon

I have a verizon galaxy tab

I want to make it wifi only..do I need to root and install a custom rom or will be backed by verizon screw me from wifi only?

From froyo forward to enable wifi only turn the device to airplane mode, turn wifi back on. That enables wifi only. It's very useful for getting apps that are on the market that Verizon blocks to their devices from downloading.
