Using the USBport

Hi, I am new to this android stuff. I cant figure out why the USB port wont work. All I want it to do (at the moment) is connect the device to the computer. Is there something i need to do to either the device or the computer. It doesnt show a usb is plugged in on either.

Are you using the regular USB or the mini port? On my tablet it is labeled OTG. My computer recognized the tablet using the OTG port but I still could not get it to show up in windows explorer.
