Unless you are going to chinese site to get you app no need for an antivirus. amazon, getjar and the market has all what you need..

no one can tell if yours can be infected by viruses.
there are some A/V's in the Market, get one.

I'm using Lookout, free from the Market. If you feel you need one, that's the one I'd recommend. It's had no noticeable effect on my performance. It has some nice features beside AV as well. Check it out:

If you disable Debugging, third party app installation and install apks only from official Android Market and well known sources like Amazon or Getjar, I think that the chances to get a virus is minimum. If you install apks from other sources, then using an antivirus gives you more security for sure.
