Can't delete photos from gallery

Having problem deleting photos originally imported to my Galaxy Player 5 from computer. Can only delete ones taken with tablet camera. When I select a group of photos in the gallery (white X in green corner) there is no "delete" button - only Share and More. When I unselect the photos, there is a delete button, but when I touch it, it says "no items selected." Your basic Catch 22. In desperation I re-set the entire device and formatted the memory. Now there are "ghosts" in the gallery - all the original groups but the photos are replaced with black rectangles. Trying to delete them, I have the same Catch 22.
Anyone have an idea about this?
