I purchased an Ainol Novo 7 Tornado and an OTG cable with it.
When I plug in the cable and insert a flash drive into it nothing happens?
The manual I got with the tablet is in chinese, it does however show a picture of the cable with a flash drive inserted into it?
Is there some sort of set up I have to do first on the tablet?

No, I don't think you need any special setup to read from connected USB Drive. Try a different USB drive, or a different OTG cable to make sure cable is fine or USB's partition is compatible. Al though Android is suppose to read from all type of partition setups but just in case.
