I've ran the Nexus 7 root toolkit and clicked the install CWM option & there's nothing to indicate that I'm rooted.. should there be a CWM or other icon..?
If I explore the internal storage there are two zipped folders CWM-SuperSU-v0.94-signed & recov-signed what am I supposed to do with these..?

Thanks.

CWM stands for clockwork mod recovery which is a recovery and not root. It wont show anything on your device because its a recovery hand you have to boot into it to see it. I am not familiar with the process you did but usually if it is not a all in one one click method there is a file that needs to be flashed inside CWM. But root checker is a great app to use like suggested above to know if your device is rooted or not. Usually you will see a super user icon appear in your app drawer after a successful root.
