Android keyboard problems

I just received my HP Slate 7. Generally I find it just great. The keyboard is slow and error-ridden. Keystrokes almost always miss. Maybe my fingers are too big. Is there a remedy for the crappy Android keyboard? Are there alternative keyboards that work better?

If you can swipe, pinch and tap on the screen, then your fingers are definitely not the problem. All virtual keyboards are pretty 'crappy' to varying degrees. An alternative would be a keyboard with Bluetooth.
