archos 101 and external hd

Will a Archos 101 power and recognise a portable HD when plugged into the USB??

I plugged a small one (usb powered) in last night. It worked.

When I plug my HTC cell phone in it only works sometimes though. If I set the phone to devault to disk drive mode and not ask what kind of UBS device it wants to be (tethered versus charge only vs disk drive ...) it worked every time. I hate having disk drive as the default though. I charge it that way more often than use it as a disk drive.
