BBC iPlayer Subtitles

Am a newbie so hope you'll be patient with me

Purchased Versus touchpad9 tablet, boxed at good price from ebay
Works OK mostly

But my wife has hearing problems and needs BBC iplayer subtitles to work
BBC iplayer & media player apps loaded ok
Works ok until selected programme plays
Only in full screen without the ability to pause, fast forward or, more importantly, access subtitles

Any advice would be most welcome
