Heavily slashing the prices of existing devices is certainly one way to draw attention during the holiday shopping season and especially on Black Friday, but an even smarter albeit risky marketing strategy would be rolling out incredibly affordable gadgets exclusively for BF and sell them only then.
Well, believe it or not, that’s exactly why HP and Walmart have recently joined hands. The world’s leading PC maker, though technically not very experienced in the Android war, seems to have already mastered the low-cost tablet game, introducing the $89 Mesquite 7-incher.
The Mesquite will reportedly sell in Walmart brick and mortar locations across the US of A for a measly 24 hours on November 29, after which it should disappear with no trace. Sounds pretty far-fetched to me, especially if the 7-incher is to garner media interest (and it probably will).
The other side of the coin is that maybe HP can’t afford to charge 90 measly bucks for the Mesquite all the time. Specifically, they might be working at a loss here, or at best for a minuscule profit margin, since the tab ain’t a pushover, with pre-loaded Android 4.1 Jelly Bean, 8 GB built-in storage, microSD support and Medfield-based 1.6 GHz Intel Atom Z2460 CPU.
In any case, provided you’re in the market for a compact on-the-go computing machine with a sensible price point, it’s hard to believe you can do better than this, so don’t even think about waiting to see if the HP Mesquite is to extend its reach post-Black Friday. Buy it, heck, buy more than one and gift or sell them on eBay.

Now that BF is gone and Cyber Monday likewise, either HP and Walmart realized the Mesquite was too solid a deal to be shelved, or on the contrary, the 7-incher didn’t make much of an impact on the biggest shopping day of the year.
Either way, the Mesquite is back and, possibly, here to stay. Only, it’s 10 bucks costlier, going for $99. It’s still sold solely through Walmart and, technically, it’s listed at a regular price of $129, so it could go up any day now.
