Yes. Although you can root before, its better that have your NC already registered before rooting.

Ok, So can it be registered after?

I was confused by the statement below and thought the device had to be unregistered to root.

You need a B&N nookColor (which we will call NC)
Before rooting, you need to complete BN's registration process, you will not be able to link your NC to your BN account to buy books after rooting. If you've registered it before see Deregistering Color Nook on instructions on how to de-register.

That statement is true. Registering after can be done but its a little bit of work to reg after. Just reg before and save yourself some work. I'd say 99.9 of all of us rooted NC owners register before rooting. There is no issues or consequences of registering your device before rooting. Almost nothing that can be done to the Nook Color is damaging or non-revisable.

Think of it as practice for when you try that "experimental" or "custom" software and hose the device... this is a simple trial run at starting over. :)

If you never plan to buy books from B&N, registering it with B&N is unnecessary. Also, if you plan to jump straight to the beyond stock roms (ie. Froyo, CM7, phiremod, Honeycomb, etc), registering it with B&N is unnecessary.

If you plan to stay in the stock B&N rom AND plan to buy from the B&N store, registering IS necessary.
