changing android 2.1 firmware version to 2.2 Development

Hello anybody here has the experience in changing the firmware version of android 2.1 to android 2.2 development. Currently my android 2.1 the text in firmware version is android 2.1 but i want to change it to android 2.2 Development.

Is this can be done in android apps programming? or what. others say it should be done if you have root access. How to deal with root access?

Generally you need a manufacturer or active user community to create a firmware update specifically for your device. It isn't like upgrading Windows.
