All,

Taking a quick look at both of these 9.7" Cobys, I think I prefer the MID9742. I know the MID9740 is the "newer" model, but the specs I see point toward the 9742.

  • The biggest difference I see is the IPS display of the 9742 vs. the TN display of the 9740. The IPS (In-Plane Switching) display is better for wider viewing angles and color. The TN (Twisted Nematic) display looks like older, and cheaper, technology.

  • Looks like they are both listed on Amazon at about the same price. The current price is: MID9742 - 159 . 00 and MID9740 - 162 . 99.

  • I also see some other posts about issues with rooting the 9740. There appears to be LOTS of work already invested and tested in the 9742.

I think Coby is trying to save some $$$ on the 9740. In addition to the lower-quality display, it looks like there are fewer accessories in the box. As long as the "older" 9742 is available, I'm leaning towards that model. Am I missing something? What do you guys think?

Thanks,

Robyski

Those issues with rooting the 9740 are no longer present. That said, if you can get the 9742, do so. It includes the accessories and apparently has a better screen. Not to mention it's less expensive, and I've provided tweaks to the stock ROM to make it work better. :)
