my husband will be using his while at various wifi hotspots, such as our library or McDonalds while he is at lunch. He sometimes checks bank balance. Everywhere I read suggests we need to purchase (no app free I guess??) VPN to block his identity while surfirng to keep hackers from hacking into bank account....help please?? thanks!!

If you go to a site that uses HTTPS in your browser, you are using a VPN of a type. The VPN is normally a single point to point trust. As in from your Tablet to your company or similar. If your Bank offers an App that is a VPN, great, otherwise, my recommendation is:
    1. Do not store any sensitive passwords on your tablet at this time
    2. Use only HTTPS connections in your browser for anything that is requiring a user ID and Password. Anything else is in the clear text on the Internet
    3. DO NOT DOWNLOAD and install apps from untrusted sources or sites. This is the most common way Trojans and Viruses are installed.

There are many many more things but my advice is to be careful what you do and you will be fine.
