External SD Card Seems to Override the Internal ROM

My Ainol Flame had me tossed as it would see the internal ROM 16 gig as the external SD card if I had no card in the side slot. As soon as I did the file managers all show the external SD Card as the one I inserted, but wont display the ROM contents even if I do a search for a unique file name. Is this normal and if not, how can I access both in the same directory listings? Regardless, is this typical of Android tablets? I think I have the file locations correct.

No, but it seems real enough.. Do you know how I can search for photos within the file manager (any of them) so I can see if the two do co-exist? It would be great to see a diagram of what the directory layout is and what each folder is for.
