gmail app redundant how to remove/hide

i have several email accounts that i use regularly and i would much prefer to have them all under a single app rather then being forced to use both the gmail and the email app. i have tried to find a place to disable notifications from the gmail app but havent been able to find anywhere to do it.
if anyone knows a way to remove the app or stop notifications please let me know. i was not able to find anything in the forums so if this is something that has been resolved please direct me to the post.

Settings->Accounts & Sync->Google. You can disable the Gmail portion but still leave the rest of the options syncing
