how do i root a Samsung Galaxy Tab 7in GT-P1010 (wifi only)

Well first i am new i am new to android and would like to know what is rooting, how do i it, and is it safe. I need to root it because my sis wants her os updated and i need to back up her apps and only way to do it is to root it. and she is computer stupid and if i leave it rooted can she mess it up or or should i unroot it when i am done.

You can root with gingerbreak, and backup with titanium backup, but there is no official update to 2.3 gingerbread and honestly you would probably be better off leaving the tablet as is.
