i need help as im totally confused about apps market and epad wont register email

hello there , can anyone help i bought an epad at xmas for my partners son its android 2.2 hes never tried downloading any apps before but recently we tried too but it had an existing email and password of somebody elses even though we bought it new i have managed to wipe these details and register the epad however when i try to register my email details it says cannot get server details has anyone any idea why this is happening as i cannot download anything also how do i download ungrades ?
