Is Cross- Platform communications possible?

I have an android-powered device, and a friend has a Blackberry, and another has the iPhone.

Are there going to be any apps that will allow communications besides the usual phonecall, like video calls, between the different kinds of devices? that would be really cool to be able to do that, as well as all the apps that do similar kinds of things.
