How would I go about mounting a external memory card via the USB port? I.e. a CF card plugged into a 6-1 reader that is plugged into the device? I have read that a few people have done it via the /udisk command. I tried entering the command via a term program, but just got a error. Do I need to be rooted?

Yes you do need to be rooted to get superuser privileges to do what you are trying. Try z4root.
