New Nexus 7 replacement in July?

Reuters report from two inside sources - there may be a Nexus 7 replacement in July and priced either at $149,
or at the same $199 (but dropping the price of the current version) -
if so, announcement at Google I/O May/15-17.

New Nexus 7 reportedly gets Qualcomm chip, better screen, and lower price

The Nexus 7 has always been my benchmark for 7" tablets.

This may make the search for cheap 7" tablets moot.

Not likely, like Amazon they aren't selling you just a tablet but an entire ecosystem. When you are tied into their 'cloud' for access to you content you likely aren't going anywhere.
