password for factory reset

i buy an android 2.3 gingerbread from an old friend and I want to reset it to the default setting but I forgot to ask him about the password, can anybody help?

My first thought is to ask the old friend for the password. But, if that for some reason is not possible, a factory reset will be your only option.
