My wife bought me a Vizio tablet two days ago for my 40th birthday, so I am new to this forum and new to the tablet.

She bought me an OEM accessory pack that included a leather binder, ear buds and a stylus, but the stylus is like a 1/4 inch in diameter. I am used to fine tip pends for math or engineering uses and this thing is so wide that I doubt I will use it on a regular basis. I downloaded the evernote app and a couple of other applications for writing, but none of enable writing quick or precise enough to make the experience worthwhile.

Anyone purchase a stylus that has a decently sharp tip but that doesn't mark up the screen?

This is one of the disadvantages of a capacitive screen. they generally don't work ver accurately with a stylus. The large tips are necessary to register a "touch" on the screen and a traditional stylus for a resistive screen won't work. Here are some options you may want to try out.

You can ignore the "iPad" part since it also has a capacitive screen.
