I'm looking for an app to upload or download files remotely from my laptop to Android tablets. Any suggestions?

Definitely look into an FTP server. Most computers (Windows 7, Mac, Linux) you can set up the FTP server in the OS. It will only give you access to files in a certain folder (for my FTP server it is the D:\FTP folder). To access the files remotely you will need to set up port forwarding or NAT (network address translation) in your router. Finally, you will need to know your external IP address of your router at home.

Not sure if this is exactly what you're looking for but for consistent updated access of files I've been using dropbox. I love it thus far. It's pretty much like a cloud. I can edit, add and delete files from my laptop without having to transfer new files or deleting files twice on my tablet.
