That error usually happens when ES explorer is cooked into a ROM. I think it's a bug in the app.
I believe you are rooted though, since it was able to dump the boot files.

script completed successfully but root checker still failed.

I was looking at Joe88's firmware dump and noticed that the device unroots itself on every boot.
So I think the root is only temporary until you reboot.

Oh well, at least that's long enough to get the firmware dump.
Once I put a restore firmware together this thing will be easy to permanently root.

I am uploading the restore firmware now.

I have tested it on my Novo 7 Elf tablet which has similar hardware and it worked, but I can't guarantee it works on the Coby 7042 since I do not have the hardware to test.
Therefore, I recommend that somebody with an already bricked tablet be the first to try it.

The Allwinner A10 tablets are actually impossible to brick beyond recovery, but a working restore firmware (which Coby doesn't provide) is needed to recover.

I've got a 9742 on its way from Texas...if dude ever ships the freakin' thing. At any rate, if you could provide the root script for that model, I'll do the dump and up it as soon as it arrives.

I think the same root script will likely work on the 9742.
If not I will just need a /system dump from your device, which luckily can be done without root.

I have the MID9742. Can you please repost the /system dump instructions.

Sure this script will dump only /system

Instructions:
- Install ADB drivers
- Run dump.bat
