I submit that if you don't know the advantages then you don't have any reason to root.

Unless you are having a problem or want to do something specific, rooting for the sake of rooting just brings additional problems.

For me, I needed root to be able to tether to the ad-hoc wifi on my phone and to fix GPS latency by editing a system file.
