Rooting

I was about to root when I read I should back everything up, so I downloaded an app for it, but it won't let me choose my external sd, and titanium won't work without already been rooted. Any recommendations?
Also, it's only to install games. rooting allows me to do that from an sd right?

You don't have to root to install games. Download them from the market.

Your casual question about how to root would require a very long and involved answer.
There are probably other forums (such as XDA Developers) that have complete descriptions of the process.
Be sure you read AND UNDERSTAND the whole process before you begin.
You might want to wait and see if ICS is coming out soon before doing this.

I did the backup after it was rooted using CWM
