I came across this thread and wanted to know how can I tell which companies or brands are illegitimate?

For example, what about Ainol, RAmos, Onda, Cube, Yuandao, etc?

Now， the Android OS is open source system, many companies in China are legal. They R&D their own Smartphone and Android MID, don't need copy others.
This legal companies are legal such as Yuandao, Giayee,Cube, Teclast etc.

Thanks, so the illegal ones are those non-branded ones who just make copies?

Basically those listed above are okay legal (Cube, Yuandua, Ainol, etc).

Also what about this:
Google does not authorize the distribution of Google mobile applications for Android apart from products explicitly approved, and only for manufacturers that are members of the open handset alliance. Almost all of these products ship with illegal Google apps.
