Update firmware first or root first?

Hi, I'm a newbie just bought Ainol Novo Elf and I was just wondering if I should update firmware or root it first? Ainol released new firmware for Elf. Which one should I do first? And also what is the difference with MrTasselhoff's root and the Superuser? Thanks

Reports are that it comes now pre-routed. Many ROMs and instructions at slate droid and tablet republic.
