Here's a big story that came in late Friday night. The USPTO made a preliminary ruling that Apple's multitouch patent is invalid. It was found invalid on all 20 points. It will now go through an appeals process, but is unlikely to be overturned. This will go a long way toward rectifying many of the lawsuits that Apple has been using as a weapon against its competitors. Perhaps this is a sign that the USPTO will finally start realizing that a lot of patents are overly broad in their wording. Wouldn't that be awesome?

It would be awesome if the USPTO straightens some of this stuff out. There are good patents and then there are those that just make you scratch your head. Interesting this happened to multitouch, I would have thought rectangles with rounded corners and the slide to unlock (later revised even broader) would have been the first to go.
