video ripping settings

I have been using the Ipad setting on my video software to rip movies. It rips them to m4v and I just rename then to mp4 and they work fine but I get the black bars at the top and bottom of the video. If I wanted them to be full screen on the vtab anyone know what custom settings I would use? Theres not an option to just choose the screen size in inches. I have a few different software programs and dont mind paying for another one to be able to do this if anyone has the settings needed.

The vtab has a 4:3 display size. Most movies are now in 16:9. Unless you crop the movie there is no way to avoid black bars.
