What do the Icons mean?

How can I interpret the small icons in the upper left corner of the screen? I have about 5 down arrows and a red exclamation mark that looks ominous.
I have an HP Slate 7.

hose are notification icons for items in the notifications list. After a while you will learn what each one is for, like updated apps, or upcoming events. If you open the notifications shade you will see tiny checkboxes you ca tap to eliminate the icons.

Where is the notifications list and the notifications shade? I can't figure out how to access those.

Well, your profiles says you have an HP Slate, but I'm referring to the Nexus 7 with Android 4.4

If you swipe down from the top edge on the left you will open the notifications shade. On the right is the controls for WiFi, BT, etc.
