If your question is "What does root mean?" I can answer it. Basically root user is a type of user which has access rights enough to change/delete/etc... anything in a Linux based system (in this case android). If you're asking what the root folder is you could call it the very base folder that everything (including system files) is kept in. Hope this helps?

It is similar to "Jailbreaking" in iOS. It allows you to do more, including installing custom ROMs, kernels, modify system files, full system backups, and to run some apps that require root access. My personal favorite app is called Honeybar and it allows you to hide the status bar in Honeycomb and truly give you full screen gaming.
