What size for importing pictures?

The manual says that the screens resolution is 1280x800 pixels. I took some picture into Photoshop Elements & cropped then to that exact size then transfer them to tab using Kies. I also transferred the original larger pictures just for comparison sake. Now both Kies & the picture on the Tab are saying that both pictures are 1024x600. The one that was originally larger also says its the same size but displays at a different ratio. Whats going on?

Kies probably resizes the images automatically to reduce file sizes. I just transfer files to the device using a file explorer and there is no resizing.
