I just purchased a Bauhn 9.7 Quad core tablet for my son to use in school, but when he brought it in to the tech department they told him it was not suitable as it had to support 5ghz wireless and this tablet only supports 2.4ghz.
Can I buy a usb wifi adapter that will do this?

You can get a portable WiFi router that will take your 2.4 and use the router's 5 to connect.

I am sorry for my ignorance but my son was told he could not access the school wifi as he needs "5ghz dual band wireless or 802.11 a/b/g/n -it must support a and n". When you say a portable wifi router - is that like a usb wifi adapter?

No it's a portable router. You use your WiFi to connect to the router, (some are battery operated), then the router connects to the school. here is just one example.
