Working apps for NookColor without rooting it

None...other than what came on the NC. The whole point of rooting is to enable the NC to accept apps that aren't from B&N, run the android market, etc.

B&N has said that they will be creating their own app market, but that the apps would be centered around reading and such.

My wife purchased a Color Nook this week and B&N said that they will be launching their own app market in March.

That is correct, B&N has announced that they will be updating to Android 2.2 and lanuching their own market. Nobody really knows what either of these mean at this point. 2.2 could be as locked down as 2.1 currently is and the App store will most likely be very limited and not the full Market. For now it is wait and see or go ahead and root and unlock your Nook's potential no matter what B&N does.
