Zip and unzip

So I'm probably goin to sound like an idiot but what does zip and unzipping a file refer to. Sorry I'm pretty new to all these terms.

"Zipped" files are compressed using some form of utility. They are usually in a file ending in .zip or .rar, but there are others as well. This sometimes allows a large file to be compressed and transferred more efficiently.

Apps like WinZip, UnRar and 7Zip are PC based utilities for this.
