Does the VTAB have any sort of feature to turn itself off after a period of time? I feel like sometimes I go to wake it up (sometimes maybe ever after just 10 minutes) and find it's shut off. And other times it seems to take a really long time to load the lock screen after I hit the power button. Any issues here?

you have the one option in settings - display - where you can set a screen timeout.
I did not like having much control over the tablet so I use a paid version of a program called juice defender - there is also a free version - it allows you to set profiles - it can turn off your wifi to save battery and much more -
perhaps something like that could help you-
also - I have noticed the behavior you described as well
