Earlier this week Google officially rolled out support for Chromecast mirroring, at least on select Nexus, HTC, Samsung and LG devices. For most folks, the experience has been pretty solid on officially supported devices, though some of us (especially Android L users) have ran into issues with sound syncing.

What if you want to try out mirroring but don’t have a device that has made the cut? If you have a rooted phone or tablet, XDA member r3pwn’s root app makes this possible. In short, the app fools the Google Chromecast companion app into believing you a running one of the 14 supported devices.

Of course just because it runs doesn’t mean it will run well. The developer marks the feature as experimental, although it reportedly being tested successfully on the following devices: HC One M8 and M8 GPE, ASUS PadFone 2, Sony Xperia Z2, Sony Xperia ZL, Sony Z Ultra, Motorola Moto X, Samsung Note 8 Tab, Samsung Note Pro 12.2 Tab, Nexus 7 2012, QHD Find 7 and LG GPad 8.3.

Bottom-line, even if it works, you may run into audio/video syncing issues and other minor problems. We imagine the previously imposed restriction of Android 4.4.1+ will also apply here. To learn more, or to download the rooted app, you’ll want to head over to the XDA Developer’s Forum.
