Coby 7036 USB Host Mode

I am trying to connect a keyboard to my new tablet. My tablet didn't come with a usb-a to micro usb adapter so I made one by splicing in a usb-a female jack into a usb-a male -> usb-micro cable. I have tested the cable in that the micro to usb-a male works to connect the tablet to the pc as a storage device. I can also use the usb-a M -> usb-a F plugs as an extension cable on my computer. I can't get the tablet to detect any usb devices i plug in. I checked voltage on the red/black lines and am getting nothing. Is there a trick to enabling usb host mode? i've tried and played with various usb splices and they are finicky. why risk damaging an 80 dollar device instead osf springing for an 8 dollar cable at Walmart or Best Buy or even Radio Shack.
USB cables do carry power so you are riskinging your device

I did consider the risks but am handy with a soldering iron and am comfortable making cables. I know it caries power and double checked all connections with a meter before actually plugging it in.

I think this is happening because the micro usb plug I have is not an 'on the go' type plug. This type of connector has pin 4 (normally unused) grounded to indicate to the tablet to go into usb host mode. I will be ordering an adapter as my connector doesn't have a wire hooked up to pin 4 and I'm not about to try to split it apart.
