How to turn off notifications at bottom?

Hi! I rooted my nook tablet following the directs from Albert Wertz. Everything is fine, etc., as far everything working as it should. I just have one annoyance that I can't seem to find the answer for. At the bottom of the screen is the bar with all info (info bar?)—time, wifi, notifications, settings. It's really annoying while I'm reading (especially so since I read 98% at night) having the notifications flash. For example, when I get a new email, it will turn to 'new email' and then flash part of the message. I haven't been able to find how to turn this off. Would love some help.

Thanks!!

I'm pretty sure 98% of your problem could be solved by turning your WiFi off at night, while you're reading. At least the flashing notifications part, the clock would still be there to tell you it's time to stop reading and get to sleep already.:)

Duh, lol. Thanks! That didn't even dawn on me.

I was able to disable the notifications for Facebook. But I can't seem to find how to do it for Gmail. But this will work anyway. :)
