IR Port for gamepad?

I'm wondering if the IR port could be used for gaming by re-mapping the remote control keys to act as D-pad keys?

I may experiment with the concept a little later, but the idea is that one could hack the guts of the remote into a gamepad, remap the keys and end up with an IR gamepad for gaming.

-at the very least one might be able to use the remote itself as a gamepad, but I don't see it being very good for it.
