It's been a long struggle, but finally Android 4.4 KitKat finally takes the top spot on Google's usage league table.
It's taken KitKat a year – it debuted 31 October, 2013, making its public appearance on the Nexus 5 – but it has finally hit a usage share of 30.2 percent for the seven-day period ending November 3, beating its nearest rivals Android 4.1 and 4.2 (both codenamed Jelly Bean) which stand at 22.8 percent and 20.8 percent, respectively.

Since Google last released Android usage data back in September, KitKat has grabbed around six percentage points of usage share.
Compare this to iOS 8, which broke the 50 percent usage mark in 40 days. However, even Apple is finding it hard to get users to upgrade to iOS 8/8.1.
With KitKat and Jelly Bean now powering four out of every five Android devices accessing the Google Play store, the older platforms are slowly being squeezed out. However, they are still likely to remain significant well into 2015, by which time, KitKat will have been superseded by Android 5.0 Lollipop, and a new Android release will be fighting to gain traction and usage.
