Hi pretty new to all of this. I bought a Lenovo A1 which has the 2.3.4 operating system . he wants to know if he can upgrade to the latest operating system?

The short answer is "no". AFAIK there will not be an official update to Honeycomb, ICS or Jelly Bean.

Of course, you could always try flashing a custom ROM.
