Pandigital 7" Tablet Freezes when coming out of sleep mode

I'm running Android 2.2.1 on a Pandigital 7" tablet. It works well most of the time. However, if any apps are running when it goes into sleep mode, it will freeze on the sign-in screen when attempting to sign back in. Sometimes it will respond VERRRRRY slowly and allow me to sign in, but then I must re-boot in order for anything useful to be done as it is so slow. I have set the screen timeout to 30 minutes and avoid going into sleep mode. However, it is a very useful feature and I would like to use it without the freeze affect if possible.
