Tablet won't install Non Google Apps.

I've purchased a China Generic Tablet with Jelly Bean O/S.
It came with many Apps pre-installed.
I have a Google a/c. and have downloaded and installed several Apps through the Google Store.
BUT, how do I install non-Google Apps?
They appear to download and Install, but, they're nowhere to be found.

Have I bought a Dud?

Any suggestions will be helpful.

Under Settings/security make sure the unknown sources box is checked.

Yes, that is Ticked.
Is it possible the manufacturer has locked out all sources other than "Google Play Store?
If so, is there a way to override it?

Have you tried the Amazon App store? Just curious if you could install from there. If you are simply downloading apk's then you should check the download folder, they could be there but not installed.
