Using USB Port for Counting Things or Timing Things

Is there any way you can connect some wires to the Micro USB port with either a pushbutton or micro-switch, in order to count something, like if you pressed a pushbutton or a microswitch? Another use would be to record the time the switch was pressed.

I read about something called an IOIO board, but the company building it gave up on the idea a few years ago. I don't need any fancy IO, just a way to connect a switch or microswitch
