Root Coby 7065 via ADB or Recovery

Is that unbootable as in unrecoverable? (hate to lose this cheap tablet with bad touch, ha, ha).
I tried the ulimage recovery, but it fails to make a backup and on reboot system reports a bad data restore adn demands a factory reset to continue. Is this one just for installing unsigned zips? or is it the 8065?

That sounds about right, the kernel is corrupting your partitions. If you flash the recovery damage will be worse.
This is due to the kernels being so different.

This was a smart move (obviously much too late) by coby after the 7048 series mess. They put on the playstore and said no more mods.

I like the tablet overall. good dual speaker sound, quite snappy cpu. Maybe later I'll replace the touch, but i've used a mouse before on a tab. ;-)

I have tried to root my 8065 with no success. I tried various methods, superoneclick, bin4ry, modified version of bin4ry where I was able to get root in recovery via adb, and the method posted here (method 2). My usb port broke ( I'm planning on fixing it soon). I was able to boot into the cwm and install the zip. When I reboot however, I get the message "user data load unsuccessful" and am forced to do a system restore. I noticed that cwm has problems mounting the system partition. "Can't mount mtd5" I also cannot backup. Data is also not accessible. I'm not sure what other info is needed.

I have rooted my 8065 using adb (method 1). The CWM recovery posted is for 7065 only, as you and I both found out. Vampirefo is working on CWM recoveries for many of these tablets, but for now, method 1 is all we have for the 8065.

With a bad usb, you could to use adbWireless.apk

If you get root, be sure to make a backup of your system files (particulary boot.img and recovery.img) as these will help Vamp in his project on the 8065 CWM recovery.

I was able to make a boot.img backup but not recovery or system etc. via cwm.

by the way: someone posted a 8065 dump: http://www.androidtablets.net/forum...firmware-dumps-coby-generation-4-devices.html

Also, I did what you told me not to do. (woops) I flashed the 7065 stock rom. then it didnt boot, so i flashed the boot and recovery from the 7065 and it booted but, now its kinda funky. I would just stay with it but, the screen is smaller, and no wifi or bluetooth. maybe I can replace those drivers?

I have got more info and compared with the 8065 info that @tpaine posted:

I can't believe you guys actually rooted the Coby 8065. I thought it was locked forever.

As a noob. Could you please post or directe me to the "correct" way of getting root on this device step by step?

I don't want to load the 7065 OS is if it's not necessary. Have you found it completely working in root with all functionality of the stock 8065 rom in tact?

Once rooted were you able to load new roms from say : Cyanogen or higher Android versions up to 4.3??

Wondering if it's worth messing with it if not all functionality is there.. literally spent hours and days researching how to root it and only now found that there are other legitamately trying to root it. Coby did a nice job locking down and guarding the posts :).

Thanks again for any help rooting this as a noob step by step.

The method for rooting the 8065 is method 1 in post 1 by vampirefo.

For specific 8065 rooting method, the thread here:

http://www.androidtablets.net/forum/coby-generation-4-technical/62681-root-coby-8065-via-adb.html

has the full root method for 8065. no need to load any 7065 files. Just ADB and vampirefo's root tools.

Would you mind if I extract the 7065_ADB_root.zip rename it 8065_adb_root.zip for download in the 8065 root thread? That way 8065 users wont have to deal with it.

Or it could be called Gen4_ADB_root.zip

AMLogic_Coby_ADB_root.zip would work as it will root all known Coby AMLogic tablets.

Wondering if anyone else is having issues with rooting the 8065 using ADB and method 1.

I downloaded all the files needed for method 1. Not sure if the device should be in recovery mode or simply in regular mode? Regardless when trying to ADB and connected via USB the computer doesn't recognize the device, meaning it's not connected to ADB. I'm wondering if there are specific USB drivers that my windows 7 laptop may have not loaded? anyone load specific drivers to adb into the device?
