After a few hours of use I hit the problem where the tablet could not connect to any wifi AP even though it could see them. Apparently this is a bug in Andriod 4.4.2 and the solution was found here :

http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2627320&page=4#post56962299

e.g

To fix wi-fi problem on 4.4.2 android you have to rename Wi-fi Direct device name.
To do that you have to go:
WiFi - then 3 dots - WiFi Direct - 3 dots - Rename Device

after doing the above the problem was solved

Just posting in case it is of help to any new owners of the tablet

Update to above issue:

The problem of not connecting to wifi access points has returned. I have tried many of the fixes from various sources without much success. Currently the only wifi I can connect to is a hotspot running on my android (JB) phone. Its strange that I can always connect to this AP but when I used a different spare phone and start a hotspot the tablet will not connect. To add to the mystery wireless routers that I was connected to all week all can't be connected to by the tablet. I have tested the access points with other devices and they have no problem connecting.

BTW : I tried FXR WiFi fix and rescue without success

At this point all I can do is wait to see if an update will solve the issue as it seems there is a serious bug in either Kitkat itself, the wifi drivers or some hidden configuration file.

Any advice would be very welcome
