There may be more than one setting you'll need to change but start by going to settings Language - Input and see what it says about the default keyboard. You may need to change it to something else then restart the tablet and change it back if it says Google.

Thank you Leeshor, I have tried your suggestion but unfortunately it didn't work! However I went to "Factory Reset" and used that. I lost a lot of material which really didn't matter but I got the keyboard back and will just add such material back as is necessary. For more entrenched android users I would suggest that they back up the material they don't want to lose first.
